About

Áslákur Ingvarsson is an Icelandic baritone known for his captivating stage presence. He holds a Postgraduate degree from The Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp and a Bachelor’s degree from the Iceland University of the Arts. His diverse musical journey also includes a Bachelor’s degree in electronic music from the Institute of Sonology in the Netherlands.

Áslákur’s operatic repertoire includes significant roles such as Leporello in Don Giovanni, Marcello in La Bohème, and Dr. Malatesta in Don Pasquale. In August 2024, he made his European debut as Dr. Malatesta in Opera Classica Europa’s production of Don Pasquale at Schloss Braunfels in Germany, sharing the stage with the world-famous American tenor John Osborn as Ernesto.

Back in Iceland, Áslákur has been a prominent figure in the local opera scene, performing with Sviðslistahópurinn Óður—an innovative Icelandic performance art group dedicated to making opera more accessible through highly intelligible and brilliantly translated adaptations. His artistry was recognized with a nomination for Singer of the Year at Gríman, The Icelandic Performing Art Awards 2024.

In addition to his opera work, Áslákur has appeared in concert series such as Ár íslenska einsöngslagsins, and he has premiered new works, including Passía by Ingibjörg Ýr, for choir, orchestra, and soloists. During the 2023 Óperudagar festival, he collaborated with conductor Bjarni Frímann Bjarnason for Sechs Monologe aus Jedermann, and later that year performed as a soloist in Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël.

Immersed in theatre from a young age due to his actor parents, Áslákur developed a strong foundation in performance arts, which greatly influences his approach to opera. His early experiences in acting led to a nomination for Best Actor at the Icelandic Film Awards in 2004. Additionally, his background as a sound designer and theatre technician brings a unique perspective to his work.

Currently, Áslákur is preparing for the role of Figaro in The Barber of Seville, premiering in December 2024. This production is part of an ambitious collaboration between Óður, Kammeróperan, and Þórunn Guðmundsdóttir, as they launch the Figaro Trilogy for the 2024–2025 season. Áslákur is actively seeking international representation to further expand his career, while caring for his young family.
